Oris Debuts New Caliber in Big Crown Pointer Date

Oris adds to its Caliber 400 series of long power reserve movements with Caliber 473, a new manual-wind movement with a 120-hour (five-day) power reserve that the independent watchmaker will debut in a new watch, the Big Crown Calibre 473.

While Oris has previously fit its Big Crown Pointer Date fit with the automatic Caliber 403, also a five-day-power reserve caliber, the new watch will premiere the latest manual-wind iteration of the Caliber 400 series, which debuted in 2020 as the first Oris in-house automatic movement in forty years.  The new caliber is the watchmaker’s tenth in-house caliber in ten years.

Derived from the firm’s well-known Big Crown Pointer Date, the new watch is a 38mm steel model with a blue dial displaying the familiar Big Crown’s familiar central two-hand time display with a central date hand and small seconds at 6 o’clock.

Like the full series of Oris Caliber 400 movements, Caliber 473 is also constructed to demonstrate high levels of anti-magnetism.

And like earlier models fit with Caliber 400 series movements, the new watch also comes with a ten-year warranty and ten-year recommended service intervals. Oris notes that new caliber took four years to develop and is the subject of a pending patent.

The watchmaker has placed the 120-hour power reserve indicator on the back of Caliber 473 to inform the wearer when its time to rewind. As a bonus, Oris is premiering its new stainless steel butterfly clasp with fine adjustment system on the Big Crown Calibre 473.

Oris Fires Up a 3D-Printed Case for Limited Edition

Oris teams with Canadian aerial firefighters Coulson Aviation to create the Coulson Limited Edition, a Big Crown ProPilot watch with an unusual 3D-printed carbon fiber case and a fiery gradient orange dial.

Oris created the 41mm case with the assistance of Switzerland’s ETH Zurich university (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology). Researchers there utilized a high-grade polymer PEKK developed for the aerospace industry. Technicians weave the material with carbon fiber to create a rigid, ultra-lightweight material.

According the Oris, the process is so precise that you can create a pattern on the case. Most carbon fiber watch cases develop random patterns.  

Oris then finishes the watch with a grey-PVD-plated titanium fixed bezel, screw-down crown and case back and a black textile strap. The watch and the movement together weigh a wispy 65 grams.

The fiery dial is meant to recall the work of Coulson’s firefighting pilots, who rush toward blazes while others turn away. Inside Oris fit its excellent and equally innovative COSC-rated Caliber 400, an anti-magnetic movement with a five-day power reserve.

In conduction with the release of the Coulson Limited Edition, Oris is promoting a documentary called “Birds of the Fireline.” Oris produced the fourteen-minute short-form documentary in-house.

Coulson Aviation is a Canadian-based family-run independent company that sends pilots, planes and equipment to areas of the world affected by wildfires.

Oris will make 1,000 Coulson Limited Edition watches. Each is price at $4,500.

Oris Launches Divers Sixty-Five With Caliber 400

Oris fits its acclaimed Caliber 400 into a full production Divers Sixty-Five model for the first time as the independent Swiss watchmaker launches the new Divers Sixty-Five 12 Hour Calibre 400.

Oris this week also debuts a new Aquis Date series with brightly hued mother-of-pearl dials, available on a steel bracelet. Oris debuted both nautical-themed watches during this week’s Geneva Watch Days, a late summer watch show in Geneva that runs through September 1.

Long reserve

As an in-house movement with a long power reserve, the Oris Caliber 400 series is one of the few in-house Swiss automatic movements boasting a long power reserve (five days). It’s inclusion here also means the new watch, in addition to the long power reserve, offers the caliber’s elevated levels of anti-magnetism, a ten-year warranty and ten-year recommended service intervals.

Adding a Caliber 400 series movement to models within the Divers Sixty-Five collection extends the availability of the movement’s heightened features to one of the watchmaker’s most popular collections. Oris has already placed a Caliber 400 series movement into several of its bedrock collections, including within larger Aquis Date watches and within the ProPilot X collection.

But as the name of the new watch implies, Oris has also added a 12-hour bi-directional rotating bezel, which means this new black-dialed model is also the first Divers Sixty-Five offering a second time zone indicator bezel.

The new watch also boasts a sapphire crystal case back and the choice of either a leather strap or metal bracelet. Prices: $3,500 (leather strap) and $3,700 (steel bracelet).

New dials

Oris is also introducing a trio of new Aquis Date 36.5 mm models with colorful mother-of-pearl dials. 

The shimmering dials, in Blush Pink, Aegean Blue and Seafoam Green, are both eye-catching and apparently on trend, given the success of pastel and blue dials among many other watchmakers in recent months.

The trio also enhances the smaller-diameter offering within the Oris Aquis Date collection, which primarily offers larger-cased options.

All Aquis Date 36.5 mm models are water resistant to 300 meters and are equipped with Sellita-based automatic Oris Caliber 733.

Oris Sweetens Cotton Candy Diver Series

Oris celebrates the summer with a colorful addition to its successful bronze-cased Diver’s Sixty-Five ‘Cotton Candy’ series, which debuted last year. With their pastel blue, green and pink dials, the 38mm confections were a tasty confection amid a challenging year.

This month, the independent watchmaker extends the Cotton Candy collection with matching recycled Perlon straps for each model. The textile is woven and attached to the wrist with a bronze buckle.

 

The new series maintains the same set of technical specifications as the earlier series, which debuted with either a bronze bracelet or a light brown leather strap.

Oris fits each watch with a Sellita-based Oris 733 automatic movement, protected by a nicely domed sapphire crystal and a case water-resistant to 100 meters. All hands and applied indices are filled with bright SuperLuminova. Price: $2,600.

Oris Launches ‘Wings of Hope’ Pilot Watches

Oris continues to expand its industry leading Change for the Better campaign for humanitarian and environmental causes as it launches two limited-edition pilot watches powered by its much-heralded Calibre 401.

The new Oris Wings of Hope Limited Edition watches are based on the independent Swiss watchmaker’s Big Crown pilot’s watch. Sales of the watches will benefit Wings of Hope, a U.S.-based aeronautical humanitarian organization founded sixty years ago.

One of the new models is a 40mm steel edition limited to 1,000 pieces while the other is a 38mm yellow gold-cased edition limited to 100 pieces. Luminous hands and markers (light green on the steel model and golden on the gold-cased edition) and a red-handed seconds subdial mark the handsome off-white retro-style pilot watch dial.

As noted, Oris is placing its Calibre 401 in both watches. As with its full Caliber 400 series, Caliber 401 has elevated levels of anti-magnetism, a five-day power reserve and a ten-year warranty. It’s also accurate to -3/+5 seconds a day – which would pass chronometer testing – and has ten-year recommended service intervals.

Both watches arrive on Cervo Volante sustainable deer leather straps and arrive in a special presentation box with numbered certificate.

The Oris Wings of Hope Limited Edition (of 1,000) in Stainless Steel is priced at $3,700 while the gold-cased Wings of Hope Gold Limited Edition (of 100) is priced at $17,000.
