Porsche Design launches a new flyback chronograph for buyers of the new Porsche 911 Dakar, a specially designed 911 named after the famed Dakar auto rally.

For these owners, Porsche design offers its new Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar and a variation, the Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar Rallye Design Edition (with an additional dial graphic). Both watches are cased in a new titanium alloy called titanium carbide.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar Rallye Design Edition, with added Dakar graphic.

The new material represents a continuation of Porsche Design’s long history as an innovator of titanium watch cases, which were introduced into watchmaking forty years ago by Porsche Design in tandem with IWC.

The newest titanium alloy is highly scratch resistant, according to the watchmaker, which says that the “smallest scratches caused by fine sand, for example, are now a thing of the past.” In addition, titanium carbide is not subject to any visible aging process, is hypoallergenic, and is lighter than traditional case-grade titanium.

Porsche Design is understandably quite proud of its new metal and even calls it out in red at the top of the new watch’s dial with a new abbreviation “TiC” (titanium carbide).

While Porsche Design still makes the crown and pushers on the Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar with standard titanium, the entire 42.7mm case for the watch is made using the new material, which the company spent years developing.

Porsche Design explains that the material is created by first compressing titanium carbide granules under several tons of pressure, and then sintering them at over 2,000 degrees Celsius. “This condenses the granules and irreversibly turns them into a homogeneous compound.”

The watchmaker explains that the case blank is then milled and honed into shape.

The dial

Porsche Design ensures a quick reading the dial of the new chronographs with a highly visible red 60 in the minute scale. This perfectly matches with the red color of the chronograph stop hands as well as the word ‘flyback.’ In addition, the watchmaker’s designers have widened the markings of the small hour display for whole hours as compared to the half-hour markings.

The Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar Rallye Design differs from the Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar only with the colorful graphic within the running seconds aperture at 9 o’clock. Its white, blue, gold, and red lines represent the colors on the modified Porsche 953 that won the Rallye in 1984.

Porsche Design designed the watch’s rotor to match the Porsche 911 Dakar rims, and makes them available for the watch in either black satin or solid white. For the Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar, the winding rotor is also available in Vesuvius gray.

Porsche Design fits its COSC-certified Porsche Design WERK 01.240 movement into the watch. This excellent in-house caliber features a flyback function that combines starting, stopping, and resetting in a single operation. The movement is visible through a titanium caseback and clear sapphire crystal. Each watch will bear an engraved limitation number on the caseback to match the number on the owner’s automobile.

As on all Porsche Design watches, th new chronograph allows straps to be changed without the use of tools. Porsche Design makes the watch’s handsome strap of black leather with contrast stitching in Shadegreen, the same hue found on the seat middle of the Porsche 911 Dakar. For the Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar Rallye Design Edition the stitching is  made of Race-Tex in Shark Blue.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar and Chronograph 1 – 911 Dakar Rallye Design Edition can be ordered only by buyers of the new Porsche 911 Dakar and 911 Dakar Rallye Design automobiles at authorized local Porsche dealers.  The watches in both liveries are limited to a total of 2,500 pieces, each priced at $14,500.

Porsche Design launches a special edition of its Chronograph 1 to commemorate the brand’s fourth year as timing partner of the GP Ice Race in Austria.

The 250-piece limited-edition echoes the original Chronograph 1 from 1972, which is often considered the first all-black chronograph.

The new Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – GP Ice Race 2023 Edition.

The new Chronograph 1 – GP Ice Race 2023 Edition, like the original watch, delivers the appearance of a Porsche 911 dashboard to the wrist, complete with luminescent hour markers and a matte-black dial.

But on the new watch Porsche Design updates certain details, such as using a pointed minute hand and red chronograph hands. The minute hand on the original model was rectangular while the chronograph hands on that 1972 edition were white.

Also reflecting modern technology, Porsche Design builds the new watch with antireflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and an uncoated, 40.8mm lightweight silver titanium case.

Inside the watchmaker fits its excellent COSC-certified WERK 01.240 caliber with flyback function that powers a quick-switch date display and a bilingual day display. Porsche Design has engraved the edition number and the unusual GP logo on the caseback. The logo, which depicts Yeti sitting on a tractor, is unique to this limited edition.

Porsche Design also provides two bracelet options: a textile variant and a classic black version made of vehicle leather and with a matte-black titanium folding clasp.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – GP Ice Race 2023 Edition can be ordered at the Porsche Design website and in Porsche Design Stores. Price: $9,650.

To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, Porsche Design will auction a one-of-a-kind Porsche Design Chronograph 1 at Sotheby’s. The watch will be sold as a set with a meticulously restored 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa “50 Years of Porsche Design Edition” unique-edition car.

The chronograph, built to mimic the original Porsche Design watch from 1972, is often considered the first all-black sports watch. It features a black dial with a red seconds hand and antireflective glass, both details inspired by the Porsche 911 instrument panel. In addition, the dial, crown, wristband, and case back bear the historic Porsche Design logo.

Porsche designed the restored 1972 Targa to pay tribute to the Porsche Design anniversary.

For the auction watch however, Porsche Design upped the vintage ante with another unique component. The movement’s rotor is designed to exactly echo the look of historical Fuchsfelge rims found on the 1972 Targa.

Porsche designed the car to pay tribute to the Porsche Design anniversary. It car features ‘Porsche Design’ lettering on both sides with a ‘50 Years of Porsche Design’ logo on the headrests. Even the dashboard echoes the theme with a silver-colored 911 plaque that reads ‘Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design’.

The auction, slated during Sotheby’s Luxury Week in New York from November 30th to December 14th, follows a six-month exhibition of both the car and the chronograph at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart just prior to being presented during Monterey Car Week in California this past August.

The two-week online auction will start on November 29 at 12pm EST and close on December 14, 2022 at 12pm EST.

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS owners can now complement their choice in sports cars with a matching Porsche Design 911 GT3 RS Chronograph, available only to owners of the newly debuted car.

The new Porsche Design 911 GT3 RS Chronograph.

The watch, offered with a natural titanium or blackened titanium finish, is built to echo the design of the car, with, for example, a matte black seconds disc at 9 o’clock embossed with white ‘911 GT3 RS’ lettering and a ‘BORN IN FLACHT’ imprint in the center, which references the Porsche Owners community of the same name.

More direct connections to the car can be seen on the back of the watch, where Porsche Design places a rotor with the same rim design as the lightweight magnesium forged wheel found on the 911 GT3 RS with the Weissach Package.

Buyers can choose from five colors, including Brilliant Silver, Neodyme, Black Satin, Dark Silver, Indigo Blue, and Pyro Red.

Porsche Design fits the watch  with a COSC-certified Porsche Design WERK 01.200 movement with flyback function, ideal for timing consecutive laps around the neighborhood. New here is the option to add a pulsometer scale or a minute display in place of a tachymeter on the bezel.

The buyer can also customize other exterior components, including the outer dial ring color, hand color, strap options and even add personalized engraving. Base price: $10,950.

Porsche Design revisits its Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition from earlier this year with the new Chronograph 1 All Black Numbered edition, an all-black titanium version of the historic design, to be issued as an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000.

Porsche Design’s new Chronograph 1—1972 All Black Numbered Edition

Like the previous model, which sold out quickly in early 2022, the new 40.8mm matte black titanium edition also echoes the original 1972 model’s size and design.

For both watches Porsche Design references its Chronograph 1, long considered the first all-black watch. The company’s use of black PVD on steel (as well as employing the then-new Valjoux 7750 automatic movement) set an example emulated for decades afterwards by sports watchmakers across the globe. Early examples of the pioneering Porsche Design automatic chronograph are highly collectible.

This newest version differs from the earlier model not only due to its individual number, but also because it features a clear sapphire caseback. That’s where you’ll see the watch’s number and a clear view of the Porsche Design WERK 01.140 caliber with COSC certification and the Porsche Design Icon winding rotor.

From the back you’ll see the watch’s number and a clear view of the Porsche Design WERK 01.140 caliber with COSC certification and the Porsche Design Icon winding rotor.

The remaining specifications echo the earlier edition, notably the highly legible dial inspired by the dashboard in the Porsche 911. Its tachymeter and the day/date display use the current Porsche font while the minute hand revisits F. A. Porsche’s own tapered design.

Porsche Design will make the watch’s 40.8mm case and bracelet with the same high performance titanium it uses in nearly all Porsche Design timepieces today. And new SuperLuminova will enhance the watch’s visibility in the dark. All Porsche Design Timepieces are produced in-house at Porsche Design Timepieces AG, the brand’s own timepiece-manufacturing facility in Solothurn, Switzerland.

Each watch arrives on a black titanium detachable bracelet with minutely adjustable folding clasp.

Porsche Design’s new Chronograph 1—1972 All Black Numbered Edition is set for release later in 2022 but can now be pre-ordered on the Porsche Design site as well as in Porsche Design Stores and from selected watch retailers. Price: $10,500.

New 911 Sport

Porsche Design has also launched a new retro-inspired model, the Chronograph 911 Sport Classic, to owners of the recently released Porsche 911 Sport Classic.

The watch features a two-tone titanium and black case while the dial, white hands, green digits, and scale markings are inspired by the automaker’s Heritage Design tachometer. The design of the 360-degree winding rotor is based on the wheel options available for the 911 Sport Classic. And for the first time, Porsche Design is offering a range of different dials for the timepiece. Price: 12,500 euros.
