Released just in time for the 98th annual Bayview Mackinaw freshwater sailing race (which commenced July 16), the Shinola Mackinac Yacht Watch Automatic Chronograph is the Detroit-based watchmaker’s latest automatic chronograph – and first yacht timer.

The Shinola Mackinac Yacht Watch Automatic Chronograph.

By engaging the watch’s five-minute countdown subdial, a skipper can time his or her entry into position at the start of any official regatta. As Shinola explains, boats “get up to cruising speed in a stretch of water parallel to the starting line. Using a yacht timer at countdown, a boat crew can precisely cut into position, get the perfect angle, and cross the starting line at the start signal.”

The Shinola Mackinac’s 40mm square steel case frames a bright canary yellow dial with orange and red accents. The yacht timer subdial, with its broad orange hand, stands out for easy viewing at the 3 o’clock position in three-tone blue.

Shinola fits a customized Sellita automatic movement inside, showing it off via an exhibition case back. The entire case is fit to the wrist with an interchangeable yellow rubber strap.

The Mackinac Boat Race is one of the longest and most difficult fresh-water races in the world. It starts in the lower waters of Lake Huron where hundreds of boats compete for two hundred nautical miles to the channel just off Mackinac Island.

Price: $3,500.

Zenith debuted the second model in series of Defy Extreme Carbon models designed to commemorate the electric rally racing championships for which the Le Locle watchmaker is official timekeeper and founding partner.

The new Zenith Defy Extreme E Island X Prix.

The new Defy Extreme E Island X Prix, cased in carbon fiber and with bright orange accents and tinted sapphire crystals, celebrates the upcoming racing series Island X Prix scheduled for this weekend on the island of Sardinia. Orange is the official color of the Island X Prix as it is said to evoking the hot temperatures of the Italian island during summer.

The color stands out against the black carbon fiber case, crown and chronograph pushers of the angular 45mm watch.

Visible in part through the front and the back of the watch is Zenith’s Defy Extreme high-frequency chronograph caliber that offers 1/100th-of-a-second time measurements, with two escapements independently beating at 5Hz (36,000 vph) for the timekeeping part and 50Hz (360,000 vph) for the chronograph. Zenith also shows off its unusual movement through a sapphire display caseback emblazoned with the Island X Prix logo.

Zenith adds to the watch’s racing and recycling theme with a special strap infused with materials of recycled tires. The Velcro strap features a black rubber central element surrounded by an orange rubber inlay. Zenith also includes two additional straps, one in black rubber and the other in black Velcro, each easily swapped without any tools.

Zenith will make the Defy Extreme E Island X Prix as a limited edition of twenty pieces. Price: $27,100.

Nomos updates its Ahoi Atlantic collection with three sporty watches designed for everyday wear.

The new Nomos Ahoi Atlantic, without date.

Available just in time for summer, the blue-dialed trio offers a nicely tweaked version of the watch, first seen in 2014.

The new versions now boast a brighter white font with newly yellow hour indexes each outlined in luminescent green.

Up-close on the Ahoi Date Atlantic.

The new typography heightens the visibility if the dial – especially as placed amid the impressive, darker ‘Atlantic’ blue dial color.

With a case diameter of 36.3mm, Ahoi Neomatik Atlantic is the smallest of the Ahoi Atlantic edition models.

Available with an automatic movement in a slim 36.3mm size (Ahoi Neomatik Atlantic, with DUW 3001 inside) or in an automatic 40.3mm version with or without a date and with a choice of an open or closed caseback (the Ahoi Atlantic and Ahoi Date Atlantic), this newest Nomos Ahoi Atlantic retains the watch’s strong 200-meter water resistance and its active-use crown protectors.

All three watches feature a top-notch woven blue-black water-resistant textile strap Nomos has custom made in France.

Prices: $4,060 (Ahoi Atlantic), $4,660 (Ahoi Date Atlantic) and $4,120 (Ahoi Neomatik Atlantic)

The NOMOS DUW 5001 automatic caliber is visible from the back of the Ahoi Atlantic. A steel back is optional.

Building on its hot blue-hued Diver X Skeleton collection, Ulysse Nardin adds a new version, the Diver X Skeleton Black, which blackens the titanium watch’s openwork design and swaps in bright yellow accents to replace the orange color of the earlier model.

The new Ulysse Nardin Diver X Skeleton Black.

With the new 44mm dive watch, Ulysse Nardin extends its X-themed design within its well-stocked dive watch collection. As the third X-series model thus far in the dive series, the watch underscores its avant-garde design with a sharp-looking concave black carbon bezel and barrel cover, a clear view into its movement and a series of yellow dial and case accents.

Ulysse Nardin protects the automatic UN-371 movement (visible through the front and back of the case) with a domed sapphire front crystal, a sapphire back crystal and a case water resistant to 200 meters. The movement, which Ulysse Nardin originally created for its Blast Skeleton collection, has been improved with the addition of an oscillating X-shaped weight. Ulysse Nardin also coats the hands and indexes with white or yellow tinted SuperLuminova.

Ulysse Nardin calls the X-Skeleton design “one of the most technical and complex developments ever undertaken by Ulysse Nardin.” To make the hour indexes appear as if they are floating over the movement, technicians covertly connected them to what passes for a dial on this skeletonized watch. In addition, Ulysse Nardin built the dominant X atop the dial using multiple layers, each finished differently to better reflect the light that naturally streams into an open-worked dial.

Ulysse Nardin will make the Diver X Skeleton Black as a limited edition of 175. It will come with both a yellow rubber strap and a black fabric R-strap made of up-cycled polyamide derived from fishing nets. Price: $28,500.

As a partner and official timekeeper to the Mille Miglia classic car race since 1988, Chopard annually issues a new limited series chronograph inspired by the 1,000-mile tour through Italy (which just completed its fortieth run from Brescia to Rome and back).

The new Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition, here in all-steel.

For 2022 Chopard launches two models. One is a steel-cased version made as a 1,000-piece limited edition, while the second is a 250-piece limited edition that features a rose gold crown, pushers and bezel.

The Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition, with Ethical gold crown, pushers and bezel.

This year’s edition features a silver-grey dial with handsome light blue hands, hour-markers and bezel inlay (with tachymeter scale). Notable this year, in addition to the color scheme, is the larger date display and a distinctive use of differing of dial finishes to separate the chronograph functions from the day-to-day timekeeping display.

Chopard finishes the chronograph counters (at 6 and 12 o’clock) with a peripheral snailed pattern, which differs from the small seconds at 9 o’clock. These displays also feature red-tipped hands that echo one of the official Mille Miglia colors. The timekeeping hands are quite visible with their broad size, blue rim and a generous helping of luminous material.

Inside both models Chopard fits a COSC-chronometer-certified ETA-based automatic movement. To better utilize this precision instrument during any competition, Chopard also fits solid mushroom-type pushers with a broad surface engraved with a knurled pattern for a sure grip. In the same vein, Chopard’s large and ratcheted crown also ensures easy use.

Racing champion Jacky Ickx wears the Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition.

Chopard fits the new Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition timepiece with a terrific-looking brown perforated calfskin strap lined with rubber. As usual, Chopard patterns this rubber to echo the tread of 1960s Dunlop Racing tires. Prices: $11,400 (with Ethical rose gold) and $7,770 (steel).
