Junghans Updates Meister Pilot Collection

Junghans updates its aviation watch collection with two contemporary variations of the Meister Pilot Chronoscope plus the Meister Pilot Automatic Navy Blue, a new three-hand-with-date model.

The two new Chronoscope models watches retain the existing Meister Pilot case size (43.3mm) and bicompax chronograph design (small second at 3 o’clock, 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock) but sport a slightly larger Arabic numeral set, a vintage Junghans logo and a cleaner dial that dispenses with the inner five-minutes track found on the current Meister Pilot models.

Junghans also retains one of the characteristic steel case features of Meister Pilot collection: the twelve concave case recesses that are meant to allow for more precise bezel adjustments.

One of the two new watches,  the Meister Pilot Chronoscope Navy Blue , pays homage to the famed North American Curtiss P-40 while the other, the Meister Pilot Chronoscope Desert, offers a sand-colored dial and a brown-black DLC-coated steel case.

Junghans is offering the Meister Pilot Chronoscope Navy Blue as a limited edition of 300 watches, each boasting a black DLC-coated steel case.

No-Chrono

The new Meister Pilot Automatic Navy Blue offers the same pilot style but without the chronograph and with a date. 

Junghans has added a date disc made to resemble a cockpit display, complete with red accents and a contrasting small seconds hand. Instead of a the chronograph caliber found in the Chronoscopes, the Meister Pilot Automatic Navy Blue is powered by the ETA-based Caliber J880.1.6.

Junghans has a long history making aviation timers, starting in the 1930s when the German-based company supplied onboard clocks for numerous aircraft. In the 1950s, Junghans was awarded a contract for the newly established German Air force and subsequently developed the J88 intermediate-wheel chronograph.

Prices: 1,995 euros (Meister Pilot Automatic) and 2,590 euros (both new Meister Pilot Chronoscope models).

Citizen Celebrates a 1973 ‘Bullhead’ 

Citizen’s new Promaster Tsuno Chrono 50th Anniversary Model celebrates a chronograph from 1973 prized for its panda-style dial and ‘bullhead’ case-top pushers.

While retaining both those emblematic design highlights, the new commemorative edition also exudes the cool 1970s feel of Citizen’s highly collectible bullhead-style Challenge Chronograph of the era.

For this commemorative model, Citizen has taken that vintage aura to the next level by creating a rich gold and black color scheme.  

Limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide and individually numbered, the Citizen Tsuno Chrono 50th Anniversary Model offers a 45mm gold-toned Promaster steel case with its bullhead-style black chronograph pushers nicely matching the black bezel.

At the same time, Citizen gilds the 12 o’clock crown and the alarm-setting crown at 5 o’clock to perfectly coordinate with the case and dial color.

Against this black and gold backdrop, the watch’s luminous sword-style hands and orange chronograph hands easily hold your attention, especially useful when using the chronograph or checking the time.

Inside Citizen fits its light-powered Eco-Drive Caliber E210, which features a power reserve of eight months after a full charge. Water resistance is a strong 200 meters.

The watch arrives with a special gold toned Promaster case and a removable leather watch roll.

The movement powers a flyback chronograph function with a 60-minute totalizer at 12 o’clock, the running seconds display at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour totalizer at 6 o’clock, power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock, a date display and an alarm on/off indicator between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock.

Citizen maintains the retro styling here with a vintage-inspired brown leather strap with a deployant clasp.

Wempe Celebrates Nomos Partnership with Icy Blue Tangente 

Wempe celebrates its long-time partnership with Nomos Glashütte by adding a special edition of the Nomos Tangente Neomatik 41 Update to the German-based retailer’s Signature Collection of limited editions.

This special version of the 40.5-mm steel watch features an ice blue dial,  Arabic numerals, hour markers, and a navy blue date disk to match blued hours, minutes, and separate small seconds hands.

Those familiar with the Nomos Tangente Neomatik 41 Update might be aware of its unusual date display. Nomos displays the date around the perimeter of the dial using two markers that shift each day to frame the current date numeral.

This patented display is underscored by a second patented mechanism that allows the date to be corrected both forward and backward. While not a new feature in the watch world, its use in such a thin caliber is unique.

Nomos added this unique date display to the Tangente Neomatik in 2018, when the watch also received several updates that included regulation of the movement in six positions instead of the usual five, new decorative polishes, blued screws, and gold-plated engraving on the rotor.

Wempe will make the Tangente Neomatik 41 Update – Signature Collection, as a 200-piece limited edition, a fact that is engraved on the case back. 

Wempe offers the watch with a dark blue textile strap with pin buckle. And even though the watch is a special, limited edition of the Tangente neomatik 41 Update, Wempe has priced it in line with ongoing model in the Nomos collection: $4,100.

Backes & Strauss Teams with Theo Fennell

Backes & Strauss teams with British jeweler Theo Fennell to create the colorful Regent Theo Fennell Rainbow, an oval watch that places Fennell’s dynamic hand-crafted London style into a contemporary black PVD steel case with a black dial.

The watch’s dark dial is offset with rose gold hour markers comprised of brightly enameled Arabic numerals. The colors seem to flow from the hot pink Theo Fennell logo at 12 o’clock to warm amber and finally from green to blue as the eye races around the oval dial. An inner oval track is set with applied rose gold pyramid markers that reflect the light as the watch is worn. 

The watch’s 40mm by 47mm case is also set alight by a single diamond set into the crown. Backes and Strauss, fits an automatic movement into the case. 

The legendary jeweler and watchmaker, founded in 1789 and now part of the Franck Muller group, offers nine examples of the black-cased Regent Theo Fennell Rainbow, each priced upon request.

As a watchmaker and jeweler known for its diamond-set dials and cases, Backes and Strauss is also offering one glittering example of the Regent Theo Fennell Rainbow cased in rose gold and set with two rows of Ideal-cut round brilliant diamonds.

Even the leather strap’s gold buckle is diamond-set, contributing to the 4.79 total carat weight of the watch. Like the blackened steel model, this jeweled unique piece is priced on request.

On the Wrist: Casio Edifice ECB950MP-1A

With one look at the new Casio Edifice ECB950MP-1A (or its stablemate ECB900MP-1A) the wearer can see why this Edifice series is so visually linked to auto racing.

Developed with assistance from race drivers, the series features a dial that mimics a race car steering wheel and gauge set. The dial features a layout with four accent colors, inspired by the color-coded push-button controls on race car steering wheels.

The speed indicator is convenient for watching races.

Here we have a chronograph dial with a bright yellow, high-visibility seconds hand. Around the dial Edifice has placed a black IP bezel engraved with tachymeter markings—not unlike a race car dashboard. 

On the wrist the watch’s matte-finished dark bezel nicely contrasts with the polished 51.5mm by 48mm polished steel case.  Edifice supplies an extremely comfortable soft urethane strap. The strap is more secure than usual thanks to a raised tip, which retains the strap end within the keeper.

Solar Power

The Casio Edifice ECB950MP-1A also features Casio’s Tough Solar Power, which essentially means there’s a tiny solar panel system built in to the watch that converts light to electricity and eliminates the need for battery changes. It can even be charged in low or fluorescent light. After full charge, the watch can be operated without solar charging for about six months with normal use of functions and about nineteen months with the power-saving function enabled.

The timepiece is also water resistant up to 100 meters and protected with a scratch resistant mineral crystal.
