Piaget Revisits a Classic Polo

Piaget revisits the golden age of Polo with the new Piaget Polo 79, a karat gold ode to the jet-setting original.

At 38mm in diameter, the new Polo is slightly larger than the 34mm original but retains the Polo’s very chic 1970s vibe. While many of that era’s high-profile luxury sport watches were cased in steel, the Piaget Polo remained an all-precious-metal model.

Like the reigning steel-cased watches of the 1970s, Piaget’s Polo also featured a bracelet that seamlessly linked to the case, with Polo’s brushed and polished gold bracelet links apparently extending across the dial, offering a pleasing uniform pattern around the wrist.

to have been sculpted from a single piece of gold.

Piaget eventually offered its gold Polo in a variety of shapes, all with precious metal cases and bracelets.

Initially fit with Piaget’s record-breaking ultra-thin 7P quartz movement, the watchmaker in the early 1980s began to offer Polo with its ultra-thin mechanical caliber 9P, which was fit into a wide range of Polo models for years to come.

The new iteration sees Piaget returning to its most classic Polo design, now updated with Piaget’s latest ultra-thin mechanical caliber, the excellent 1200P1 automatic movement.

And in addition to the slightly larger 38mm case diameter, the new Polo 79 exposes its nicely finished caliber through a modern sapphire caseback.

Piaget Launches Polo Perpetual 

Piaget launches the Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-thin, the watchmaker’s first perpetual calendar placed within its 42mm Polo case.

While we’ve seen chronographs and skeletonized models within the watchmaker’s Polo collection, and watches with tourbillons and minute repeaters within the larger Polo Emperador cases, the new watch marks a first for the modern Polo case, and a premiere for what we’re hoping will be a series of perpetual calendar offerings within the pure Polo collection.

Powered by the new 1255P caliber, the thin watch (8.65mm) is the latest in an impressive collection of Piaget watches powered by variations within the 1200P caliber family, a series that itself stems from the famed micro-rotor caliber 12P, which in 1960 was the thinnest automatic caliber on the market.

In its new guise as a perpetual calendar, the caliber advances the day, date, and year (until the year 2100), months, moon phases and leap-year cycle.

Piaget launches the Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin with an eye-catching dark emerald-green patterned dial with and three displays for the date, month (along with leap-year indication) and weekday at 9, 12 and 3 o’clock, along with the moonphase indication at 6 o’clock.

The dial’s horizontal line pattern continues a Polo dial tradition that also finds varying finishes within the four subdials. Note that the lines on the dial also appear as links on the steel bracelet.

New here is a Piaget interchangeable SingleTouch system for the bracelet that allows the wearer to easily change it and attach the included rubber strap.

Piaget Adds Moonphase to Altiplano 

Piaget enhances its ultra-thin Altiplano collection with a set of four artisanal Métiers d’art Altiplano Moonphase watches, each displaying a translucent blue enamel sky created by master enameler Anita Porchet.

The four Métiers d’art Altiplano Moonphase watches display Chinese constellations, each represented by small white dots and precious stones. At night, hidden SuperLuminova-coated artwork lights up to reveal the moon and the season’s ‘Guardian’ constellation.

Each of the four models is associated with a different Guardian of the season: The Azure Dragon stands for the East and is associated with Spring and wood; the red bird, representing the South, is close to Summer and fire; the white tiger, looking West, is a friend of Autumn and finally a black turtle (for the North) represents Winter.

One the lower half of each watch Piaget displays moon rays made of graduated diamonds, sapphires and garnets. The large moon phase display features a moon window framed with gold ring set and graduated diamonds. Each 36mm watch is cased in white gold or rose gold with a baguette diamond bezel.

Following two years of work, the new models are among the first in the Altiplano collection to feature a moon phase display. Two additional models, each with mother-of-pearl dials, also debut the moon phase display within Altiplano.

Piaget powers the new series with its 580P Altiplano Manufacture automatic mechanical movement. On the back you’ll find a deep blue-lacquered moon-shaped oscillating weight.

Each season of the Piaget Métiers d’art Altiplano Moonphase is a limited edition of eight individually numbered timepieces.

Piaget Frames its Polo Skeleton with Diamonds

As one of the few top-tier watchmakers also well versed in jewelry making, Piaget has always been able to combine both creative realms when designing watches. We’re accustomed to seeing technically advanced horology while being assured that Piaget’s jewelers will inevitably frame – and enhance – its creative time displays with finely set gems.

With its newest Polo Skeleton Diamond Paved, a highly jeweled 42mm white gold version of the famed cushion-shaped-bezel watch, Piaget introduces the first gem-set Polo model that utilizes its next generation skeleton movement, Caliber 1200S1, which builds on many years of openworked movement expertise.

Piaget designed the new movement, here colored slate-grey, to enhance the original 1200S, itself a skeletonized version of the famed Piaget 1200P ultra-thin automatic caliber. It maintains the 2.4mm thinness of the 1200P.

Piaget has enhanced the anti-magnetic properties of the caliber while maintaining the movement’s off-center oscillating weight. And the caliber still retains a strong forty-four hour power reserve and a thirty-meter water resistance rating.

The new gem-set Polo Skeleton, a 2022 Watches & Wonders preview, is still quite thin, measuring 7.35mm thick (compared to 6.5mm for the non-set Polo Skeleton model), despite now hosting 268 brilliant-cut diamonds.

The watch comes with a white gold polished and satin-finished ‘H’ design integrated bracelet that Piaget has set with an additional 1,478 diamonds. As befits a jewelry house that works within a horological legacy, Piaget finishes the setting with a ‘reverse’ diamond set into the crown.

Piaget Skeletonizes its Steel Polo

Piaget has skeletonized its luxury sport Polo steel watch, creating an airy new open-worked dial framed by the Polo’s famed cushion-shaped dial cutout, rounded bezel and curved case. And, with a notably thinner case, the new Piaget Polo Skeleton mingles Polo’s chic legacy with Piaget’s identity as a groundbreaking force in ultra-thin watches.

In order to create a thin Polo Skeleton, Piaget designed a new 42mm steel case that still echoes the familiar shape of the all-gold 1979 Polo debut. That shape was most recently revived in 2016 when Piaget debuted a new-generation sporty Polo collection cased in steel.

With this new skeleton model, Piaget introduces a new steel Polo case that measures a wispy 6.5mm thick, thirty-percent thinner than the 9.4mm cases that define current non-skeleton Polo offerings.

Equally critical here is Piaget’s work to create a pared-down version of its caliber 1200S, the ultra-thin automatic skeleton movement Piaget places within its existing Piaget Altiplano skeleton models, among others. The same Altiplano collection also includes a range of ultra-thin watches featuring Piaget’s award-winning (and even thinner) ultra-thin 910P and 900P calibers.

Robust yet thin

Piaget says that despite the leaner movement and case, its new Polo Skeleton will still act like a general sports watch. This seems fair, but the watch’s sportiness is limited as the watch demonstrates water resistance to a basic thirty meters, which will keep the Caliber 1200S movement free of moisture while worn in the rain but prevent it from being rated for diving. The movement’s platinum rotor does contribute to the robust forty-four hours of power reserve.

Piaget is offering its new Polo Skeleton with two designs – the first with a movement in Piaget Blue PVD and the second in a slate gray finish. Piaget places the watch on an interchangeable steel bracelet that allows the wearer to quickly change the look of the watch by attaching a leather strap. Piaget provides one leather strap with each watch.
