Junghans Updates Meister Pilot Collection

Junghans updates its aviation watch collection with two contemporary variations of the Meister Pilot Chronoscope plus the Meister Pilot Automatic Navy Blue, a new three-hand-with-date model.

The two new Chronoscope models watches retain the existing Meister Pilot case size (43.3mm) and bicompax chronograph design (small second at 3 o’clock, 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock) but sport a slightly larger Arabic numeral set, a vintage Junghans logo and a cleaner dial that dispenses with the inner five-minutes track found on the current Meister Pilot models.

Junghans also retains one of the characteristic steel case features of Meister Pilot collection: the twelve concave case recesses that are meant to allow for more precise bezel adjustments.

One of the two new watches,  the Meister Pilot Chronoscope Navy Blue , pays homage to the famed North American Curtiss P-40 while the other, the Meister Pilot Chronoscope Desert, offers a sand-colored dial and a brown-black DLC-coated steel case.

Junghans is offering the Meister Pilot Chronoscope Navy Blue as a limited edition of 300 watches, each boasting a black DLC-coated steel case.

No-Chrono

The new Meister Pilot Automatic Navy Blue offers the same pilot style but without the chronograph and with a date. 

Junghans has added a date disc made to resemble a cockpit display, complete with red accents and a contrasting small seconds hand. Instead of a the chronograph caliber found in the Chronoscopes, the Meister Pilot Automatic Navy Blue is powered by the ETA-based Caliber J880.1.6.

Junghans has a long history making aviation timers, starting in the 1930s when the German-based company supplied onboard clocks for numerous aircraft. In the 1950s, Junghans was awarded a contract for the newly established German Air force and subsequently developed the J88 intermediate-wheel chronograph.

Prices: 1,995 euros (Meister Pilot Automatic) and 2,590 euros (both new Meister Pilot Chronoscope models).

Citizen Celebrates a 1973 ‘Bullhead’ 

Citizen’s new Promaster Tsuno Chrono 50th Anniversary Model celebrates a chronograph from 1973 prized for its panda-style dial and ‘bullhead’ case-top pushers.

While retaining both those emblematic design highlights, the new commemorative edition also exudes the cool 1970s feel of Citizen’s highly collectible bullhead-style Challenge Chronograph of the era.

For this commemorative model, Citizen has taken that vintage aura to the next level by creating a rich gold and black color scheme.  

Limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide and individually numbered, the Citizen Tsuno Chrono 50th Anniversary Model offers a 45mm gold-toned Promaster steel case with its bullhead-style black chronograph pushers nicely matching the black bezel.

At the same time, Citizen gilds the 12 o’clock crown and the alarm-setting crown at 5 o’clock to perfectly coordinate with the case and dial color.

Against this black and gold backdrop, the watch’s luminous sword-style hands and orange chronograph hands easily hold your attention, especially useful when using the chronograph or checking the time.

Inside Citizen fits its light-powered Eco-Drive Caliber E210, which features a power reserve of eight months after a full charge. Water resistance is a strong 200 meters.

The watch arrives with a special gold toned Promaster case and a removable leather watch roll.

The movement powers a flyback chronograph function with a 60-minute totalizer at 12 o’clock, the running seconds display at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour totalizer at 6 o’clock, power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock, a date display and an alarm on/off indicator between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock.

Citizen maintains the retro styling here with a vintage-inspired brown leather strap with a deployant clasp.

Hublot Big Bang Supports Rhino Protections 

Hublot has been supporting SORAI – Save Our Rhinos Africa India –since 2019. An organization founded by Hublot ambassador and former international cricket star Kevin Pietersen, SORAI helps keep rhinos threatened with extinction safe from poachers.

As with the two previous limited editions, part of the proceeds from the sale of the 100 Big Bang Unico SORAI will be donated to the organization.

The colors chosen for the third limited edition are those of sunset, recalling the heightened danger faced by rhinos as night falls. Here, the sun is a symbol of hope, of a new dawn.

Proceeds from the sale of the latest Big Bang Unico SORAI ($24,100) will go directly to projects supported by SORAI to equip helicopters with cameras, raise awareness in schools about the consequences of poaching and to provide backup to rangers on the ground.

These strategies are implemented where the need is biggest and most pressing: South Africa. South Africa is home to more than 80% of the world’s total population of rhinos, with the majority of poaching taking place in Kruger National Park, as it has the largest population of wild white rhinos left on earth.

“If purchasing a watch can buy time, then it is a small gesture with huge implications,” says Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe. “We have used our limited editions to help him gain access to more state-of-the-art technologies on the ground, put together more surveillance teams, as well as rescue injured or orphaned rhinos, with the single shared aim of shielding this endangered species.” 

“Our actions on the ground (surveillance teams and equipment to prevent poaching, rhino sanctuaries and refuges) are vital. However, in order to act, we first need to raise public awareness, increase publicity and make this a visible cause,” adds Pietersen.

Chopard and Mille Miglia Celebrate 36 years

Chopard returned to Brescia for the 36th time in succession as the World Sponsor and Official Timekeeper of the famous 1,000-mile Mille Miglia.

The pair teamed-up again this year (as on more than a dozen previous occasions), once more tackling the course in the instantly recognizable ‘metallic raspberry’ Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in which they made their 1000 Miglia debut.

This year’s event was won by reigning champions, Andrea Vesco and Fabio Salvinelli.

In addition to the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing crewed by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and Jacky Ickx, Chopard Ambassadors Zhu Yilong, the acclaimed Chinese actor, and Romain Dumas, the celebrated endurance racing driver, also competed under the ‘Team Chopard’ banner in a 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster.

Chopard also continued its tradition of introducing new Mille Miglia timepieces, with four Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs, plus an additional, very special ‘Italian Limited Edition’ of the Mille Miglia GTS Chronograph – some of the proceeds from which are being donated to victims of the recent Emilia-Romagna flood disaster.

Comprising four new models crafted in Chopard’s own Lucent Steel, which is fifty percent more resilient than regular steel and incorporates material recycled from the medical, aerospace, car and watch industries.

The 40 mm chronographs are fitted either with Chopard’s signature rubber strap based on the pattern of a 1960s Dunlop race tire or a brown calfskin leather strap evoking traditional driving gloves.

What makes this year’s Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs extra-special, however, are their dials: each of the four variations is based on the paint hues and interior finishes typically found on the type of pre-1957 cars eligible for the 1000 Miglia.

This means a choice of Rosso Amarena (cherry red), Grigio-Blu (grey blue), Verde Chiaro (light green) and Nero Corsa (racing black). In keeping with a 36-year tradition, each watch carries a miniature ‘1000 Miglia’ route marker on its dial and case back. Prices start at $8,830.

In addition to the Mille Miglia Classic Chronographs, Chopard has also produced a very special version of its larger Mille Miglia GTS Chrono.

Also made from Lucent Steel in just 100 examples, part of the proceeds from each sale are being donated to victims of the devastating floods that swept through the Emilia-Romagna region in early May. 

This 44 mm edition carries the green and red colors of Italy, with its olive green bezel featuring a tachymeter scale for speed and distance calculations. Further marking-out the ‘form and function’ nature of Chopard’s Mille Miglia watches, the Mille Miglia GTS Chrono Limited Edition Italy is also fitted with substantial ‘mushroom’ pushers and a large diameter crown to provide a firm grip and ease of use while on the road.

Bulova Adds Two to Marine Star

Bulova expands its nautically inspired Marine Star collection with a dramatic automatic model and an eye-catching orange-dialed quartz chronograph.

The 45mm steel-cased automatic Marine Star Series A watch shows off its mechanical heart by exposing the Miyota Caliber 82S5 movement’s escapement through an aperture on the dial and its rotor though the clear case back.

Bulova surrounds that ticking space with a sunburst-finished central dial and a sun-ray textured hour track. Orange accents enliven the dial even more on the running sub-seconds dial and the Arabic minutes markers.

The sporty watch is water resistant to 200 meters with the assistance of a screw-down crown.

Bulova pairs the watch with a matching silver-tone stainless steel bracelet with a push-button deployant clasp. Price: $650.
