Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950, Meteorite and Set Galaxy

All year Parmigiani Fleurier has been celebrating its twentieth Anniversary by debuting an impressive set of timepieces. You may recall the one-of-a-kind Kalpa Hebdomadaire Anniversairefrom this summer or a few of the impressive debuts from SIHH in January, including one of my 2016 favorites, the Tonda Chronor Anniversaire, an integrated high-speed split-second chronograph.

Earlier this month Parmigiani Fleurier released two more beautifully realized Tonda timepieces. While not technically pre-SIHH 2017 debuts, these watches will be seen at the show in Geneva in mid-January, but can also be found in Parmigiani Fleurier boutiques next month.

The new pieces, the Tonda 1950 Meteorite and Tonda 1950 Set Galaxy, are thin slices of luxury of the wrist. The Tonda 1950 Meteorite expands the color options available for this series of special meteorite editions, which were previously presented in abyss blue and black nickel. Here Parmigiani Fleurier sets a genuine white meteorite dial into a thin (7.8mm) 39mm diameter titanium case. Cut using a process developed by the Manufacture's dial-makers, a slice of Swedish meteorite has been polished and chemically treated to bring out the so-called Widmanstättenpatterns formed as the metal slowly cools over a long period.

The Tonda 1950 Meteorite is a numbered special edition and features the words "Edition Speciale” engraved on the case back. Price: $19,500.

The Tonda 1950 Set Galaxy features a stunning aventurine dial, inspired by the night sky in Val-de-Traverse, Switzerland. The 39mm watch offers the wearer a piece of midnight blue aventurine, a type of glass discovered in 18th-century Italy when a glass blower dropped a sliver of copper into melted glass. He christened this new material "aventurine" (per aventura means by chance in Italian) which is different from the mineral of the same name. Crushed then recomposed, aventurine glass contains sparkly copper inclusions. Here the dial is framed by a bezel and case set with diamonds, forming a halo of light around it. The crown’s milky white opal provides the finishing touch.

Like the Tonda 1950 Meteorite, the rose-gold cased Tonda 1950 Galaxy is driven by the PF702 proprietary automatic movement decorated with Côtes de Genève and beveled bridges. Both watches feature Hermès straps. Price: $23,900
