The world’s best-known Master of Materials captures the dusk-to-dawn vibe in a polished high-tech ceramic monobloc case and crown, paired with a matching ceramic bracelet. With Thinline credentials, their cases are a mere 5.0 mm thick. Inside, they house the Rado calibre R420 quartz movement, with 13 jewels, measuring less than a millimetre thick. This pioneering combination, paired with a case size of just 37 x 43.3 mm, is a true feat of miniature engineering and material mastery.
In black, the Rado True Square Thinline is innately stylish. Its sinuous design is exquisitely refined, feeling smooth against the skin. Up close, nuanced details emerge through the flat sapphire crystal, with the subtlety of a sun-brushed black dial and matching black printed indexes. High-tech ceramic is a beautifully light substance, remarkably scratch-resistant, and a testament to exceptional craftsmanship.
On its own, these qualities might be enough to love it. But surprisingly, it doesn’t stop there. High-tech ceramic is not only durable and impervious to almost everything; it also has a rare silkiness to the touch, offering exquisite comfort against the skin. When placed on the wrist—whether fine, large, gentle, or rugged—it feels as if it’s always belonged there. This is particularly true for timepieces that feature ceramic elements in their bracelet, where the sensory experience becomes total and unforgettable.
Rado first introduced high-tech ceramic in 1986. Its sensuous feel, durability, scratch resistance, and surprising light weight quickly captured the hearts of watch enthusiasts worldwide. Though related to common ceramics, high-tech ceramic is truly a product of advanced science.
Under highly controlled conditions, pure and finely calibrated powders of aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide, and silicon nitride—each with uniform grain sizes—are shaped and baked at high temperatures to create a watch case with the desired dimensions and properties. Rado’s innovative methods involve mixing these mineral powders with a plastic carrier medium, allowing them to be injected into precision moulds at pressures around 1000 bar.
Once cooled, the pieces are removed from the mould and the carrier agent is dissolved in a chemical solvent. The final sintering phase occurs at 1450°C, a precisely controlled process that gives high-tech ceramic its extraordinary density and hardness, far surpassing regular ceramics. This process requires expert precision, as the first moulded elements shrink during sintering, with the particles tightening up as porosity disappears. The change in dimensions, roughly 25%, must be calculated carefully to ensure the final product meets exacting standards.
The result? A case that stands at 1,250 on the Vickers scale, ready for final diamond-tool machining and finishing—transforming into an impressive Rado timepiece.
