This Week in Watches

This Week in Watches features Concord, Junghans, Speake-Marin and Ulysse Nardin.

Concord Saratoga Lady

This fashionable black and gold ladies’ quartz watch features a 31mm blackened steel PVD case with rose gold and diamonds on its bezel, a gold crown and a caseback embossed with a horse design that pays tribute to the collection’s thoroughbred inspiration. The bracelet matches the case with its black PVD-treated stainless steel and polished rose-gold-plated vertical links. The watch is held to the wrist with a stainless steel spring deployant buckle with pushers.

Ulysse Nardin Freak Lab

This new boutique-exclusive version of the famed Freak showcases a re-centered balance wheel, a date function, and the breakthrough UlyChoc safety system – a new generation of shock absorbers designed, developed and produced entirely in-house. But for many collectors what makes this limited edition, boutique-only FreakLab particularly interesting is its use of unusual materials, including blackened titanium and carbon fiber. The middle case and horns are crafted of blackened titanium; the case bezel is constructed of carbon fiber. To use the Freak, simply rotate the bezel (freed via a safety clip at 6 o’clock) and then set the hours and minutes and the date. The other bezel winds the mainspring barrel, which is designed for a power reserve of more than seven days. Price: $75,000.

Speake-Marin The Dong Son Tourbillon

Named for drums made by the Dong Son culture in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam between 600 BC and the 300, this beautiful 38mm watch features a hand-finished tourbillon framed superbly by a Durnico steel bridge. The remaining rhodium-finished German silver bridges and movement plates are circular-grained with polished screw heads and countersinks. On the dial you’ll find an outer ring of egrets and an inner ring of plumed warriors holding their weapons between the twelve points of the starburst. Speake-Marin has engraved the watch’s technical details on the back adjacent to the platinum rotor. The meticulously detailed dial is complemented by a red gold Piccadilly case. As with all watches from this independent watchmaker, this new piece includes sculpted heat-blued hands, finely finished movement and fluted crown, here set with a diamond.

Junghans Max Bill Ladies

This German-based watch company adds new models for ladies’ wrists, including this minimalist Max Bill design with a bright red satin-textured leather strap and matching numerals. The 32.7mm steel quartz watch, which is also offered in a blue dial-strap combination, features a minute track and hands brightened by an environmentally friendly luminous substance. The crystal is made of hardened Plexiglass.
