Exploring the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon

In the race to be thin, even a nanometer can make all the difference. With this in mind, Bulgari mastered a technical feat in the new Octo Finissimo Tourbillon. Made up of 249 components, the ultra-slim tourbillon movement measures a mere 1.95 millimeters in height and fits into a platinum case measuring 40 millimeters in diameter and sitting 5 millimeters tall.

To achieve this milestone the movement utilizes ball bearings in place of jewels to reduce friction found in locations like the tourbillon cage pivot. The ball bearings also direct the main spring barrel and escape wheel and, to save space, the regulator assembly was moved so timing adjustments can be made on the balance wheel. The timepiece is complete with fine finishes including a Côtes de Genève and hand-beveled edges throughout the movement.

Holding the current title of World’s Thinnest Tourbillon Watch Bulgari clearly excels at working with minuscule parts. For a deeper understanding, iW sat down with Sabina Belli, Executive Vice President of Bulgari, and Senior Director of Bulgari Watches, Fabrizio Buonamassa. Check out what they had to say:
