Ulysse Nardin has been extending its collection of dive watches during the past two years with a steady stream of impressive debuts, from contemporary to vintage-style. But when it came time to team up with the non-profit One More Wave to introduce a special limited edition watch dedicated to surf therapy for wounded veterans, both partners looked directly to Ulysse Nardin’s toughest watch, its Diver Deep Dive, as a starting point.
“We really needed the watch that could stand up to the conditions and pressures in the surf and sand,” says Kyle Buckett, managing director of One More Wave, the San Diego-based organization that provides customized surfing equipment and assistance to veterans. “The watch is tough, very easy to read and the titanium case keeps it lightweight.”
The Ulysse Nardin Diver Deep Dive One More Wave is a 46mm black DLC titanium-cased timepiece with yellow accents, a decompression valve at 9 o’clock, crown at 2 o’clock, an extension bracelet and offers 1,000 meters of water resistance. The case-back is engraved with the “One More Wave” logo to signify the partnership.
One More Wave was founded among the U.S. Navy SEALS community in 2015, and the non-profit operates a custom surfboard workshop to make boards that meet each veteran’s specific needs, including choice of design as well as being fit for specific disabilities. Buckett notes that the organization’s needs are greater than ever, with fifty-seven applications just last month.
François-Xavier Hotier, President of Ulysse Nardin Americas, explains that he was so impressed by his experiences while visiting One More Wave and the U.S Navy SEAL Training Camp in Coronado, California, that he was convinced right away that Ulysse Nardin needed to partner with the organization.
“Their dedication, courage, and camaraderie is inspiring and we hope to bring more awareness to this important work,” he adds.
“Surfing is actually one of the most effective therapies we’ve ever found for combating depression as well as post-traumatic stress,” explains Buckett. Indeed, he notes that many veterans’ centers are prescribing surfing as therapy for their members.
“When veterans are in the ocean environment, they are completely in the moment and can escape from their injuries and traumas. It’s our job to put them out there with the right equipment and tie them in with the growing community of surfing veterans.”
Ulysse Nardin shares a connection to nautical timekeeping with the U.S. Navy. In 1905, Ulysse Nardin won a competition to create the most precise marine chronometer and subsequently became the official supplier to the American Navy.
In addition to a financial contribution, Ulysse Nardin says it hopes to bring awareness and raise funds for the organization through the launch of the Diver Deep Dive One More Wave.
