With more distinctive angles, the newest update to Corum’s Admiral AC-One 45 Chronograph announces a more contemporary Admiral AC-One with clearer contrasts and a sporty new dial pattern.
Corum’s changes to this particular nautically themed Admiral (which traces its origins to the Corum Admiral debut in 1960) are largely cosmetic -- more evolution than revolution. But they do include the addition of a new strap and clasp.
Primarily, the Admiral AC-One 45 Chronograph now features a more angular dodecagonal bezel when compared to its chronograph predecessor. This brings back the clear, un-softened twelve-sided shape that has long made the Admiral so distinctive. And while the twelve nautical pennants remain (on the flange), they are muted in this instance, clearing the dial, which allows Corum more space to modernize it. Those who desire colorful nautical pennants can still choose from scores of options within Corum’s full Admiral collection.
Many chronograph collectors will welcome Corum’s move from monochromatic dials to these new black or white dials with contrasting sub-dials. Corum has retained the winning tri-compax layout, but has surrounded its subdials with a wholly new dial treatment and pattern. The dial now comes with a “Grenadier fendu” motif, which Corum says is a unique pattern worked on by a team of its own designers in La-Chaux-du-Fonds. This also means that the dial is unique to the brand.
In addition, Corum has replaced the “60” hour marker at 12 o’clock with the Corum key and brand logo, both of which have been slightly enlarged. Corum has also included two titanium inserts between the bezel and case, a technical addition that will offer Corum options to insert colors or other materials as desired in future variations.
While the previous Admiral chronographs were offered with either a rubber strap or metal bracelet, the new Corum Admiral AC-One 45 Chronograph comes with a vulcanized rubber strap and a triple folding clasp, which replaces the old tongue buckle. Corum will also offer the watch with either a titanium or rose gold bracelet. Powering the chronograph is the ETA-based Calibre CO 132, protected to 100 meters of water resistance. The movement is visible through the screwed-down open-worked caseback.
The 45mm watch is available with a black or white dial. The black dial version comes available in either rose gold or titanium with black PVD treatment. The white dial is also available in titanium or rose gold. Prices: $9,900 (titanium) and $18,000 (rose gold).
