Winning Hearts

A few watchmakers specifically appeal to lovers each Valentine’s Day with specially designed timepieces, typically infused with heart shapes and red hues. (We showed you an interesting new take on this idea from Ulysse Nardin earlier this week.)

Like good chocolates and real roses, these watches demand a premium price. But can anyone really put a price tag on true love?

Below we’ve gathered our favorite hearts.

Franck Muller Vanguard Heart Skeleton watches.

The Franck Muller Vanguard Heart Skeleton exposes its seven hearts on its dial with an appealing openwork layout. Here, the hearts actually support the 153-component manual movement Franck Muller sets into a choice of 32mm or 35mm gold or steel cases with and without gemstones. Functions include hours, minutes and small seconds at 6 o’clock. Prices start at about $22,000.

Blancpain reinterprets its Villeret Women Quantième Phases de Lune as it continues its annual Valentine’s Day debuts, a tradition initiated by the brand in 2001.

Issued in a 99-piece edition, the latest Valentine’s Day timepiece appears with a natural white mother-of-pearl dial marked by eight brilliant-cut diamonds serving as hour-markers. A central hand shaped like a Cupid’s arrow points to the seconds, while a fourth hand tipped with a red-lacquered heart indicates the date. The distinctive moon is characteristic of Blancpain’s feminine timepieces.

The heart of this Valentine’s Day 2019 special edition – its 913QL.P automatic movement with a silicon balance spring – is housed in a 33mm red gold case set with 64 brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel and lugs and comes with two interchangeable alligator leather straps. Price: $24,500.

Breguet offers a Valentine’s Day option in its Reine de Naples collection, designed for women, as it plays with shades of pink in this Reine de Naples 8905. The watch’s 28.45mm by 36.50mm white gold fluted oval case frames an iridescent pale pink mother-of-pearl dial.

A moon and several stars in white gold take their place against the deeper pink of the moon-phase indicator, powered by Breguet automatic caliber 537DRL2. The pink cabochon-cut sapphire set on the crown adds sparkle. Finally, the piece glitters by a setting of diamonds on the bezel and the dial flange. This is a limited edition of twenty-eight. Price: $39,500.

Jaquet Droz appeals to lovers with the Lady 8 Petite Ruby Heart, a new timepiece the brand says is made for “romance and passion.” This 25mm red gold watch, limited to twenty-eight pieces, features a figure-eight dial with a ruby heart topped with a ruby heart bead that swivels freely.

The watch’s bezel is set with sixty-eight diamonds, and its buckle is set with twenty-three diamonds. Jaquet Droz 615, a self-winding movement with a silicon balance spring and pallet horns, powers the watch. The movement’s red gold oscillating mass is engraved with a wave pattern. Price: $28,100.
