Montblanc Celebrates Minerva with New Star Legacy

Montblanc continues a yearlong celebration of its storied Minerva manufacture (now 160 years old) with two new models designed for ladies. The Star Legacy Small Second for ladies, in two sizes and numerous variations, offers diamond detailing on the dial and a handcrafted Sfumato alligator leather strap. The entire Star Legacy collection is inspired by pocket watches made by Minerva during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with round cases finished with gently curved sides.

These highly legible dials, another feature of Minerva pocket watches, are decorated with Montblanc’s exploding star guilloche pattern in the center. This décor highlights the diamond ring at 6 o’clock framing the small seconds counter, which in turn features a smaller Montblanc exploding star guilloche pattern. Prominent Arabic numerals, which have been redesigned, are at 3, 9 and 12 o’clock, with a “dotted” railway minute track (meant to recall early pocket watches) surrounding the display.

Inside, the self-winding Caliber MB 24.08 drives the hours, minutes and small seconds of the 32mm models, and it offers 42 hours of power reserve. The self-winding Caliber 24.16, with 38 hours of power reserve, drives the 36mm models.

Two sizes, two metals

The 32mm red gold timepiece features an ivory-colored dial while a chocolate-colored dial complements the 36mm red gold timepiece. Both are fitted with Sfumato alligator straps from the Montblanc Pelletteria in Florence. Incidentally, “sfumato” is the Italian word for “smokey” or “blurred” and is used here in reference to a leather process that results in a delightful graduation of colors achieved by artfully blending many layers of thin paint applied by hand.

The stainless steel Star Legacy Small Second models have silvery white dials and anthracite-colored numerals, indexes and hands. The 32mm watch offers a choice of a Sfumato alligator strap or a stainless steel bracelet, the latter paired with a stone-set bezel featuring 68 diamonds. The 36mm steel watch also has a diamond bezel option, with 76 diamonds framing the dial. Prices: $2,840 to $8,000
