Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Carbon Automatic Skeleton

At its debut at SIHH in January, the brilliant red and black Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Carbon was hard to miss. It was among several dramatically skeletonized tourbillons from the Geneva brand made of multiple, high-tech materials. The watch features an Excalibur Spider-type skeletonized case with a DLC-treated crown, case-back and flying tourbillon movement frame all made from titanium.

In that watch, light-but-strong titanium is teamed with multi-layered carbon to create the case while fluted carbon and red lacquer make up the bezel. The watch is Roger Dubuis’ first with a movement plate, bridges and a tourbillon upper-cage entirely made in carbon. As Roger Dubuis explained during SIHH, because the movement’s tourbillon bridge made of extremely light carbon, the watch’s power reserve jumps to ninety hours, exceeding expectations.

This week Roger Dubuis adds a companion piece, the Excalibur Spider Carbon Automatic Skeleton, with complementary red and black markings and an almost equally lightweight case.

Instead of a manual-wind tourbillon of that premiere SIHH example, this new watch offers Caliber 820SQ, Roger Dubuis’ impressive skeletonized micro-rotor automatic caliber that debuted two years ago, which can be found inside other Excalibur Automatic Skeleton watches.

The new watch retains the color codes of the earlier tourbillon model by featuring black DLC titanium elements offset by contrasting red touches. The new Automatic also highlights its powerful micro-rotor, a specialty component for Roger Dubuis, with the slogan ‘Winding System’ and distinctive red markings along its perimeter. Absent is the carbon honeycomb décor between the plate and the bridges seen on the earlier example. Both models are issued as 88-piece limited editions.
